Maharashtra to rename housing settlements that have caste signifying nouns
Mumbai: The Maharashtra state cabinet on Wednesday has decided that it will rename housing settlements and colonies in the state that have caste identifying names. The proposal was made by social justice minister Dhananjay Munde. The cabinet has decided that these settlements be renamed with names of prominent personalities.
Munde says had got the idea from NCP supremo Sharad Pawar who had made a mention of such a move prior to the elections. After getting the social justice ministry Munde had once again consulted Sharad Pawar over the same.
The social justice department then conducted a cursory survey on the prevalence of such names and found that many settlements in the rural areas had names like Brahmanwada, Maharwada and so on. The department also found that a majority of these were unofficial names for the settlements or colonies while some names were official.
