Many posted photos of people on the streets following the mysterious sound.

A mysterious loud sound was heard in Karnataka's Shivamogga district on Thursday night, followed by what many of Twitter claimed to be tremors.

The sound was heard around 10:20 pm in Shivamogga, and led to reports of tremors even from nearby Chikkamagaluru district.

It is currently unclear what caused the loud sound, with many on Twitter wondering if it was a sonic boom or an earthquake.

Neither the National Centre for Seismology or United States Geological Survey (USGS) websites show any record of an earthquake in the region. A Met officer too told reporters that so far no earthquake has been recorded.
